The University of Manchester is the first university to become an official patron of the Educate North Awards.

The Masood Enterprise Centre (MEC) at The University of Manchester, the largest single-campus university in the UK, is the first Higher Education institution to become an official patron of the prestigious Educate North Awards, which were founded in 2015 to celebrate the world-class achievements of the educational sector across the North.

The 2020 awards are now open for entries and will be staged at the Hilton Deansgate Hotel on the evening of 23rd April 2020.

The Masood Enterprise Centre will support the organisation and promotion of the awards as well as its two spin-off competitions for entrepreneurs The University Entrepreneurs Challenge (UEC) and next year the University Entrepreneurs Grant (UEG) which will see four students, graduates or academics pitch a bright idea in front of the awards audience and potentially walk away with a cash prize of £1000 to invest in a full business plan.

The awards also celebrate improvement and excellence in the Further Education sector and in Sixth Forms – the organisers announced that Heart Yorkshire, Smooth North West and Smooth North East will be official Radio Partners and will run on-air campaigns for the event over the next 2 years.

‘Educate-North has grown rapidly to become a highly competitive and sought-after endorsement of change, improvement and excellence in the higher and further education, and Sixth Form sectors’ said Deputy Director of MEC, Tony Walker.

‘It is vital that we support enterprise education and student start-ups for the growth and prosperity of the North at a time of economic uncertainty. The awards showcase the important research and development undertaken across the education sector and we are proudly committing our support over the next three years.’

He concluded; ‘As Manchester accelerates our support for new entrepreneurs we are also delighted to support the two smart entrepreneurial competitions which Educat North has spawned and are developing’.

Dr John Kennedy CBE who co-founded the awards with broadcaster Rob McLoughlin said today; ‘MEC and The University of Manchester’s backing and endorsement reflects its pioneering roots and also its wider responsibilities to be a trailblazer for not just its immediate environment but for the entire north’.

‘We are delighted that it is our first institutional patron as we open the door to welcome others on board so that this showcase and initiative can now expand and present the achievements of the north’s university and full education sector to the wider country and especially the decision makers in Whitehall and Westminster’.

The Educate North Awards 2020 are staged by RM Communications Ltd and run in association with Prolific North and the events company Don’t Panic.

A guide to a successful entry by David Edmundson-Bird

Are you considering entering into one of our award schemes but aren’t sure what it takes to complete a winning entry? David Edmundson-Bird, a renowned judge of multiple awards, has put together his top tips on what the panel looks for during the judging process.

When receiving an entry, the main points I look for are:

  • Make sure you respond to all of the tasks
  • Please use the official form
  • Don’t use marketing fluff or try to hide things from us with weird language – if you are trying to hide the truth, bluff or just avoid being direct, it will work against you
  • Bear in mind the person reading your entry may be a leader in your field

Objective(s) & budget

  • Make sure you put down clear, measurable objectives.
    • These should either be business objectives, marketing objectives or comms objectives.
  • You should be using your objectives to help you define successful results in your evaluation.
    • Did you have any key performance indicators (KPIs) that you set yourself?
  • Make it clear how the budget is used for aspects of the work.
    • If you have exploited assets from another campaign or business activity, make sure you include the true cost of these assets in your costing.
  • Nothing is ever free.
    • Even if you have no media costs and you’ve used establishment staff as sunk cost, make sure you help us understand the cost of time spent or the loss of value as a result of staffers unable to work on other work.

Target audience & strategy

  • Clearly define your target audience.
    • Particularly when looking at the audience for communications, have you identified a clear, specific target audience for your comms?
    • Have you gone beyond basic demographics and thought about things such as digital behavioural, geo-locational or psychographic targets?
  • Give a clear strategy about your plan to engage with those targets.
    • What was the route to reaching that audience?
    • What were the stages or tasks you needed to go through to achieve your objectives?

Implementation & creativity

  • Show clearly how you executed the strategy.
    • What did you do to ensure you were going to achieve your objectives?
    • What did you do that was clearly unique and unusual?
    • What rules did you break?
    • What new and different approach did you use that sets your thing apart from anyone else’s?

Results & evaluation

  • Please relate these to the objective(s) stated in your objectives and budget.
    • Your objectives should have been measurable so did you achieve them?
    • Did you meet your KPIs and do they underpin the success of the work?
      • Did you exceed them?
    • How did you evaluate the softer measures?
      • By what measure is this a success?
      • Would you do anything differently if you were to repeat the work?

Why should you win this category?

  • This one is often the clincher when it’s a close race – you really want to win this so make sure you convince the judge that you are a worthy recipient.
    • Why you and not the others?
    • Why should I pick yours?
    • In a pile of also-rans, what will make me think ‘Hey this is a one-off!’

So, that’s it! You’re now fully equipped to submit a winning entry. To find out more or enter into one of our upcoming award schemes, click here.

Monday Motivation, The Don’t Panic Way

Don’t Panic’s Way to Monday Motivation!

Author: Nancy Dykins, Don’t Panic

Keeping up, saving face, being great at stuff can take its toll.

Sometimes we can’t do all of these things. And not every day will be great. Thankfully, we are becoming more open about this and realising it’s OK to say, “Actually, I’m not coping.”

Many of us will experience periods of poor mental health at some time in our lives, so we owe it to ourselves to do all we can to look after our amazing minds. A major factor of good mental health is our surroundings and people. This is why an open, supportive, enjoyable and positive workplace is so important.

So, I asked the team for their words of encouragement or inspiration. The little internal mantra or self-talk that gets us through the tough times. Turns out we are a pretty wise bunch. Our Monday meeting was spent sharing these and we were so uplifted, we decided to get them all down and share.

Have a read, or bookmark this for a bit of inspiration if you need it. I’ve credited the team member who suggested each one and source where known, but please forgive any accidental plagiarism…

Heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing,

awful, ordinary life. And it’s

breathtakingly beautiful.

Speaker Bureau

Here at the Don’t Panic Speaker Bureau we always aim to give you what you want, and who you want. So, as always we’ve been busy lining up new speakers for you to hear and plenty of events for them to attend.

This week we have two new additions to our bureau, and we can’t wait for you to meet them.

Claire Lomas

Since her freak accident in the highest level of eventing, Claire has found new sports including skiing, set up a business, written a book and organised fundraising events. Her life has been turned around, but it did have one similarity, she was busy again.

Claire speaks publicly about the split second that changed her life, and candidly describes the darkest times alongside the gradual process of turning her situation around, and surprisingly how the best five days of her life have all been after her devastating injury.
